Law of the Future

Announcing the Third Annual Law of the Future Conference:

Globalisation, the Nation-State and Private Actors:

Rethinking Public-Private Cooperation in Shaping Law and Governance

8 and 9 October 2009

The Peace Palace, The Hague

The 2009 Law of the Future Conference will gather key scholars, practitioners, representatives of leading businesses, NGOs, and government officials in order to engage in a dialogue and debate on the changing role of private actors in a globalising world. The idea is to focus a discussion on the issues of public-private cooperation in setting and enforcing norms to meet transnational challenges.

The over-arching question is: In this era of globalization, does the ever-increasing complexity of political and socioeconomic relations require that a new equilibrium be sought with respect to public-private cooperation in shaping law and governance?

Keynote Speeches will be delivered by: Gunther Teubner (University of Frankfurt) and Peter Wakkie (Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Governance Counsel, Ahold)

The Conference will examine four pertinent and interrelated topics in which private and public cooperation plays a significant role:

  • Private Actors and Self-Regulation
  • Regulation of Financial Markets and Institutions
  • Enforcement of Corporate Social Responsibility Standards
  • The Realisation of the Millennium Development Goals through Public-Private Partnerships
